Volunteer Spotlight: Roy Luber
Written by Sandra Nelson, Shepherd’s Center Volunteer
Roy Luber has been a volunteer with the Shepherd’s Center for five or six years and during that time he has spread his talents out to cover many of our volunteer needs. He is a dedicated member of our Handy Hands crew, offering his time and ability to help many of our members with repair needs. He and his wife, Gloria, have rehabbed two houses, and he credits those experiences with his extraordinary know-how. He says he can tackle everything but plumbing, (but then he says even plumbers don’t like to do plumbing!)
He is also a driver for our Transportation service, and enjoys the feeling that he gets from helping our clients get back and forth to their doctor appointments. He knows that many of them cannot afford to take Ubers or cabs to their doctors, and feels good that we are offering them this service. He does try to drive at least once or twice a month whenever possible. He said that he feels that someday he may need transportation, and hopes that there will be someone to help him out if that day comes.
Roy and Gloria volunteer together at our yearly spring fundraiser, and he enjoys the crowds and seeing the support the Shepherd’s Center receives from the community. Gloria sometimes helps in various capacities and they manned the hors d’oeuvres booth last Spring.
Roy retired from the IT Department at Nestle Purina and shortly thereafter discovered the Shepherd’s Center and he has been a valued resource ever since. He works us in between his summer hobby of golf and his winter hobby of bowling. He and Gloria enjoy travel, and have been to Hawaii, Egypt, Israel, Italy and Jordan. They are now planning a trip to the UK. While they are home they enjoy pampering and walking their treasured 11 year old mixed breed pup, Liza, “with a Z.”
We are so lucky to have Roy as a volunteer, and share his many talents with us. He says he counts his volunteer time as “Jesus Dollars”. We are sure this extraordinary helper will cash those dollars in!
