About Shepherd's Center

The Shepherd’s Center started its programs and services with just a few volunteers and one focus: a passion to serve. Today, we have over 200 volunteers that contribute to helping older adults stay actively engaged in life. Not only do they thrive, so does our community as people of all ages are enriched by the wisdom, stories and legacy of those in their later years.

We’re on a mission

The Shepherd's Center inspires dynamic living among mature adults through volunteerism, enrichment and community connection. To our volunteers and those they serve, it’s more than a mission statement. It’s a core value that enriches our volunteers, participants, community and those we serve.

Mission, Vision and Purpose

A history of serving older adults.

It was 1998 when a small group of St. Louis volunteers and congregations joined together to start Shepherd’s Center. They envisioned the far-reaching impact that community-based volunteers could have as they empowered older adults to stay independent and fully engaged socially, intellectually and physically.

This was also an opportunity to join hands with several denominations to support an interfaith common cause. It’s the same vision embraced by Rev. Elbert Cole when he opened the doors of the first Shepherd’s Center in Kansas City, MO back in 1972. Today there are more than 50 Shepherd’s Centers nationally.
